Thanks to two generous donations this holiday season, the Wellington Food Bank is able to sustain its growing list of client families.
Food bank director Mark Gabbert of Zion Lutheran Church said the organization recently received donations of $1,000 from Wellington Eye Care and $1,000 from the efforts of Wellington residents from the Latter-day Saints church.
More than 100 families are registered with the food bank, and the number continues to grow. “New people are registering all the time,” Gabbert said.
The food bank fed 80 families during Thanksgiving week, providing each with a turkey. The recent donations will make it possible to provide families with ham for Christmas, he added.
“We’ve had a lot of support,” Gabbert said of multiple community efforts to bring in donations of money and food.
“The need has been great, but the response has been equal,” he said. “The whole community is pulling together.”
Hats and coats donated at the Wellington Recreation office will also be available for food bank clients this month.
Wellington Community Church provides space for the food bank, which is open the second and fourth Tuesdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. To register, clients must bring proof of income and residence.
