Aug. 28 is the deadline for nomination petitions to be turned in for three openings on the Poudre School District Board of Education. The election will be held in November if there is a contested race in any of the districts.
Candidates must live in Districts C, D or E. Maps are available online at www.psdschools.org.
Two interested people who live in District E, which covers the Wellington area, have picked up petition packets so far. Petitions require 50 valid signatures, but the district recommends getting more in case some signatures are invalidated.
Current District E director Larry Neal will not be seeking re-election because he is moving away.
Jana Ley, who has represented District D, is term limited. Two people have picked up nomination packets for that position.
Current board of education director for District C, Jim Hayes, has also picked up a packet. He is the only potential candidate in that district as of Aug. 17.
All school directors are voted on at large, which means eligible electors vote for one candidate from each director district.
More information about running for the board of education is available at www.psdschools.org. Under District Updates, select Board of Education Election Info. Those interested in getting a petition packet should call 490-3607 weekdays before 4 p.m.
Serving as a PSD board of education director is a volunteer position. Directors serve four-year terms. Meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. Board members also serve on one or more special committees that meet periodically.
Aug. 31 is the last day to file an affidavit of intent to run as a write-in candidate.
An orientation session for qualified candidates will be held at the PSD Johannsen Support Services Center, 2407 LaPorte Ave., on Sept. 10.
