Town administrator’s contract renewed

The Wellington Town Board has renewed a contract with its town administrator, Larry Lorentzen, for an additional two years.
Lorentzen, who started his job in Wellington (Colorado) in October 2000, sought no salary increase or other changes in his current contract. He is paid $93,392 a year.
Wellington’s population has doubled since Lorentzen’s arrival. The town had 2,672 people during the 2000 census, and the population is now estimated at 5,500.
Prior to voting unanimously on July 28 to renew the contract, board members confirmed that they will follow the traditional performance review for Lorentzen around the Oct. 1 start of the new contract. Board members, who are the town administrator’s supervisor, will fill out evaluation forms and then discuss them with Lorentzen. An evaluation date has not been set.
Wellington business owner Doug Andersen asked the board to delay approving the contract extension to a date following the evaluation. The topic “TA contract extension” was part of the agenda released four days prior to the meeting.
“It’s somewhat important to allow the public to bring up their concerns,” Andersen said. “I request you give the public more than two or three days’ notice.”
Board members responded that they can terminate the administrator’s contract without cause at any time with a severance payment equal to six months’ salary.
If Lorentzen should choose to resign, he is required to give the town 60 days advance written notice. This new contract is in effect until Sept. 30, 2011.
