New rules for uranium mining in Colorado will be the topic of a hearing in Loveland on April 15.
Once adopted, the rules will be used to implement three bills passed by the state legislature in 2008 to regulate activities such as in-situ uranium mining proposed by Powertech USA for lands located in Weld County between Wellington and Nunn.
The Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety has drafted the rules for consideration by the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board. The board also has the option of proposing its own rules and amendments.
A draft of the proposed rules is available online at http://mining.state.co.us/Rulemaking.htm. Printed copies may be obtained for $20 from the DRMS office at 1313 Sherman St., Room 215, Denver CO 80203. A CD of the proposed rules costs $5.
Written public comments must be submitted by March 1. They must include name, address, e-mail address and telephone number. They should be mailed to the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board, Attn: Irene Stanton, 1313 Sherman St., Room 215, Denver CO 80203. They may also be submitted electronically to Irene.Stanton@state.co.us.
The April 15 hearing starts at 1 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 4705 Clydesdale Parkway, which is adjacent to the Larimer County Fairgrounds. Additional public comment sessions may be scheduled at a later date.
